Dental Implants

Dental implants have long stood as the most popular method of saving damaged teeth. It is a well-known surgical procedure that places a Titanium implant into the jawbone which fuses with the bone over a few months. The implant would act as the replacement structure for your missing teeth.

What does the procedure look like?

Placing dental implants is a surgical procedure and it is generally performed by an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon would at first numb the gum tissues of the jaw where the implant must go into. Later, a small incision would be made at the point of the missing tooth where the implant would be inserted. The oral surgeon would place the Titanium implant into this space and the tissues of the incision site would be sutured with soluble stitches. A certain healing period would be advised to promote osseointegration (fusion between the implant and the jawbone) of the foreign implant. The patient would have to re-visit the dentist for a second appointment during which the oral surgeon would remove the stitches, attach an abutment over the implant, and place a tooth-like restoration (mostly crowns) to cover the implant.

Why would one require dental implants?

Dental implants can be used to replace more than one missing teeth. Teeth replacement in dentistry not only serves to replace missing teeth but to restore aesthetics as well. The replacement teeth can be in the form of a dental crown, dental bridge, partial dentures, complete dentures, etc.

Dental implants not only function as a teeth replacement remedy but can also assist other dental procedures. Implants are capable of functioning as a device that can support removable dentures and as mini-implants for temporary anchorage devices.

Patients can continue to practice good oral hygiene routines after placement of the implant as keeping your oral cavity free of plaque is the key step to a life-long healthy smile.M
